Over the counter medications to bring on your next travel

Packing for my next trip, I was thinking I could share with you some medications I bring with me as they come in handy in some worse case scenarios.

  1. Decongestants. Have you tried flying with a congested head? No fun. High altitude and changes in air pressure cause blocked ears by themselves. When you have colds, sometimes you feel your head about to explode! Decongestants could help with some of the headache, although not 100% all the way, it does help. I’ve only traveled with colds once and I pray I never have to again, though. 🙂
  2. Pain-killers– Who wants pain while traveling?  Headache, migraine, knee pain—all these can kill your traveling mood. Of course there’s the chance that the breath-taking scenery could take your pain away, and so pain meds would be unnecessary. But the safest choices would be Paracetamol or its combination with Tramadol. Stronger ones would include celecoxib. Be careful, though. Pain killers have its effect on the kidney and can also upset your stomach. 🙂
  3. Anti-Diarrhoea. Seeing a city means tasting its food. And there is no food more authentic than street food! But wait, you soon have an upset stomach, and then boom, nature calls! These medications may help impede your third episode of explosive watery foul smelling stools.  (“May” because I’ve seen diarrhoea in its worst kind may take a while  to recover from) . Common brand would be Loperamide.
  4. Anti-histamines- These anti-histamines may control allergic symptoms and could help with the itchiness that may come. Its side effect: sleepiness, may be useful in itself too with that jet lag! In my bag I have Loratadine.
  5. Anti-hyperacidity meds. Gaviscon or a proton pump inhibitor- this is a quick remedy for that burning epigastric pain.

These are band-aid remedies, meaning treatment of symptoms only as they arise. Underlying causes may need definitive management  and a trip to the doctor may still be necessary.

Did I miss anything that should have made it to this list?
